Working Artist Studios

Working Artist Studios is an independent, family run gallery and creative hub in Ballydehob. It’s a building run by artists for artists and holding inside itself galleries, artist studios, an event space and a community print room. More than that, WAS is a flow of energy and a creative network of like minded people. A key player in local festivals and in the wider arts scene in West Cork, since it began in 2000 WAS has offered a vibrant programme of exhibitions and artist’s talks from artists both emerging and established, as well as poetry nights hosting a number of top profile Irish and international poets.

Meet our team of 4!

Paul Ó Colmáin

Paul Ó Colmáin graduated from the National College of Art & Design, Dublin and is a print maker, specialising in wood engraving. His work is inspired by his love of history and the natural world. It explores the depiction of light and has been used to illustrate several books of poetry by leading Irish poets. He is a musician, poet and teacher.

Dubhaltach Ó Colmáin

Dubhaltach Ó Colmáin is a visual artist who specialises in metal sculpture using welding and gas cutting techniques to create figurative works. He uses a multi-disciplinary approach but has become fascinated with the process of working with steel, which he views as a metaphor for his own experience of life; the gouging into, melting down, deconstructing and reassembling of a hard, cold material until it becomes something familiar and meaningful. As part of Ballydehob Jazz Festival 2021, Dubhaltach and Paul will create a window installation in Working Artist Studios so come and have a look to see their musical themed display!

Marie Cullen

Marie Cullen is a founder member and Director of Working Artist Studios. A graduate of NCAD, she also completed Art Disability Training in Crawford College of Art. She is a painter and mixed media artist. Her medium is the exploration of any material to decipher the building blocks of life. She sees herself as an archeologist, peeling away the layers to see what lies beneath. She has worked as a teacher with children, adults and special needs classes.

Selene D’Alessandro

Selene D’Alessandro is a project manager and creative producer. She holds a BA in History and Preservation of Cultural Heritage from University of Florence and an MA in Art Museum and Gallery Studies from Newcastle University. She has experience delivering public engagement and education projects in glass making, paper craft, singing and music for schools, families and other community groups. She believes in making art accessible to the wider community and she is passionate about the importance of playfulness and creativity in everyday life. Selene and Marie are the brains behind the Jazz It Up! packs and are looking forward to seeing all the brilliant works created by our community!
